This year the celebrations of Annual College Day was modified.
THE SCHOLARS' DAY :

It was celebrated on 7th December, 2000. Dr Bhalchandra Mungekar, the Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai, Mumbai, was the Chief Guest. Dr. P.D. Dhepe, the Chairman, of the Finance Council for Modern Education Society, Pune, presided over the function and felicitated the Scholars by distributing the prestigious prizes.

FUNFAIR : The Annual Fun-Fair was scheduled on 19th & 20th December, 2000. A spell of gloom was cast on the first day of Fun-Fair due to sad and untimely demise of Shri N.V. Samant, due to the sudden, a popular teacher of Chemistry, Junior College. The spirit of the students of revived on the next day. And the Fun-Fair was attended by a large number of students with usual meriment.

The Annual College Day celebrations took place on 21st, 22nd and 23rd December, 2000, with the usual pomp and enthusiasm. The College activities were managed in a suave manner by the Students' Council under the able guidance of General Secretary, Mayur Samant & Prof. In-Charge V.M. Lele.

Students enjoyed the Winter Break between 26th December, 2000 and 1st January, 2001, before they resumed their studies with all sincerity for Annual Examinations to be held in March/April/May, 2001.

The College held the First Symposium on Marine Bio-technology on Monday, the 8th January, 2001, Dr. Joseph Baker, from Towns Ville, Australia, a wellknown Marine Bio-Technologists was a leading personality in the Symposium. Dr. Ayyappan, Director of Central Institute of Fishery Education (CIFE) and the Vice Chancellor of Deemed University was the Chief Guest at the inauguration. The Symposium was well attended by more than 100 participants some of whom were the Post Graduate students in the subject of Zoology, Botany and Bio-technology. The resource persons were drawn from Central Institute of Fishery Education (CIFE), National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Cancer Research Institute (CRI), Research Institute of Haffkine, C.B. Patel Research Institute, National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Institute of Science & University of Mumbai.

TATVADARSHAN

On 19th & 20th January, 2001, a series of lectures were arranged for Girls students of all Third Year regarding Premarital Counsellings and Family Welfare. The Resource Persons were drawn from the fields of journalism, social work, and judiciary in Family Court.

Prof.(Ms.) Preeti Shirodkar, was awarded a Scholarship for her Research and Presentation by the Institute of Advance Studies, Simla.

Ms. Aditi Shetye of F.Y.B.Com. received Gold Medal at Open National Level for her skills in Rope Malkhamb.

RETIREMENTS :

Retired on superannuation from 31st December, 2000.

SEPTEMBER, 2000.

PATENT :
The retired Prin. P.G. Hirlekar, had suggested that the oils from the shells of Coconut have medicinal properties. Dr.(Mrs.) S.S. Zarapkar, the Head, Department of Chemistry, developed a process to extract oil. Her patent for extraction of oil from Coconut Shells was accepted by the Government of India in August, 2000. It has been established that the Oil has antiseptic and larvicidal properties.

NATIONAL LEVEL COURSE ON VACUUM SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY :
The D.G. Ruparel College in collaboration with Indian Vacuum Society conducted a course in Vaccum Science and Technology from September 18th to 23rd of 2000. Dr. T.M. Desai of Department from Physics was Course Director. This was an exceptional occasion where a course of Indian Vaccum Society was conducted in a College. The course was inaugurated by Prof. A.P. Pradhan, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Y.C.M.O.U., Nashik, and it was concluded by the valeditory address by Prof. S.B. Patel, Head, Department of Physics, University of Mumbai. The participants had the benefit of the presence of Dr. Gordon Livesay, a leading personality in area of Vaccum Technology. The course was attended by 53 scientists from various Research Organisation/Institute alongwith the users of Vaccum Technology in Industries.

BIO-TECHNOLOGIES CONFERENCE : A TOWNSVILLE, AUSTRIALIA
Dr.(Mrs.) M.M. Indap and Prof.(Mrs.) S.P. Pathare participated in the international Marine Bio-Technology Conferences 2000 (IMBC - 2000). They presented posters and read papers on activities of various extracts from Marine Animals during 29th September, 2000 & 4th October, 2000.
