Runanubandh Runanubandh, a tie that binds, a relationship that nurtures, a contentment that defies time unites the members of the vast community that is the RUPAREL COLLEGE, a journey that defines a golden age of existence and calls once again for a consolidation of togetherness. And Miles to Go.... Education is a companion, which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate, no despotism can enslave. At home a friend, abroad an introduction, in solitude a solace, and in society an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue, it gives, at once, grace and government to genius. Without it, what is a person? A reasoning slave, a splendid savage. Joseph Addison, 'The Spectator' The D.G.Ruparel College, an institution, a force that has been constantly attempting to forge its way to the forefront in the field of higher education and research is now on the thresh hold of its Golden Jubilee. It is thus time to take stock, sit back for a moment to cherish its achievements and consider the path it chooses to adopt in its relentless search for perfection ... Down Memory Lane Founded in 1952 by the Modern Education Society, Pune, the D.G.Ruparel College, Mumbai, has over the years emerged as a reckoning force in the field of education. A multi faculty college, with one of the largest campuses in Mumbai, it began as a Science and Arts College, with the Commerce faculty being brought in, in 1979, to suit the changing requirements of the students. The last decade of the twentieth century sought the introduction of the Three Year Integrated Degree Course for TYBSc in the Vocational Subjects of Industrial Chemistry and Instrumentation with the bestowing of the UGC Grants. The continual developments and demand for science and technology then necessitated an expansion to house the Nuclear and Computer Laboratories. For parallel educational activities that co-opt social concerns and the pursuit of specialisation, the College has made available space for the Institute of Distance Education, University of Mumbai, which conducts counselling sessions and as well as contact courses in the area of Extra Mural Studies. Further, the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nashik has its nodal centre housed in the College premises to counsel its B.A. and B.Com students as also assisting students enrolled for prestigious programmes like MBA, B.Lib.Sc. and M.Lib.Sc. The premises also house a Law College, which has produced various eminent members of the judiciary over the years. At a more primary level is the BCTS, the BrihanMumbai Centre for Talent Search, which serves as a feeding cadre for the brilliant minds, whose strong foundation ensures a stable future. Further, the college has a Gymkhana for a variety of indoor activities and a huge ground, which is used for numerous sports, not merely by its own students but also by some of the schools in the vicinity. This is ably contrasted by the well-maintained lawns, which provide a beauty that completes the ambience for a perfect working atmosphere. This and its convenient location have in fact attracted a plethora of teachers' bodies, which meet here at their convenience for brain storming sessions on a wide range of issues. A feeling of community is generated by close knit relations between the staff and students, with ever changing policies being introduced to suit their personal requirements, in the form of a book loan and night reading facilities, to mention a few. The non-teaching staff too has its own self-managed benevolent fund, which it uses to fulfil its needs, in case of emergencies. Our immense pride lies in the ever widening conquests made by our students, who, coming from different walks of life, have risen to occupy positions of great consequence in varying fields at both the national and international levels. Our Philosophy Over and above its constant strife for excellence enshrined in its motto 'For the Spread of Light', lies its personalised interest in the overall development of students, in the true spirit of education. An ever evolving process it is these foundation years that shape the attitude, values and commitments of generations of individuals, who in the future will be a shaping force for the nation, through the various positions they occupy. The college perseveres to nurture in them the qualities of social leadership, so as to make them adults, who are well equipped to integrate into and strengthen the social order. In this the college is well aware of the forced restrictions placed on a system, which is stretched to its limits by an ever burgeoning number and the grave responsibility that society has placed on its shoulders. And so the college adapts to the evolving requirements of the social fabric by inculcating in those within the college and those visiting it an awareness, among other things of the ecology, by nursing through provision and exemplification the spirit of 'Clean and Green'. Our Laurels That the motto of the college is a lived experience is regularly testified by the academic pursuits and performance of its staff and students. Year after year our students are locked in a healthy competition to find place in the merit list that gets recorded in history through glorifying newspaper reports every year. The graduate and postgraduate results are equally heartening with a number of First Classes and Rankers being produced every year. Their love and involvement in their subjects is also equally demonstrated by the doctoral and postdoctoral research projects undertaken and completed by members of the staff and students. The college has also continually excelled in sports and other activities, defying its image as a book worms' college. The Kabaddi and Kho-Kho teams have won at various levels continually, for a period of sixteen years. The cricket team too is attempting to follow suit with a hat trick in the recent past. At an individual level the college has excelled in swimming, chess, gymnastics and mallakhamb. In fact some of the students' have been selected by their training school to demonstrate the sport abroad. With the curriculum as the axis the students also actively participate in a number of co and extra curricular interests. While our cadets of the NCC are repeatedly selected for the BLC (the Basic Leadership Course) and proudly march at the Republic Day parade, the NSS organises yearly blood donation camps over and above contributing to the Adult Literacy Programme. They have also adopted the tribal village of Vangani and made it so self sufficient as to enable it to stand successfully on its own. The children of the David Sassoon School for Destitute Children, located in the vicinity, are also attached to its volunteers, who attempt to provide them with an ambience, for their childhood to blossom naturally. The college also has a number of Associations that, through a variety of co-curricular programmes, inculcate an awareness and love for the subject beyond the confines of the syllabus. Workshops at the University level that provide a platform for exchange of ideas to various scholars are also conducted by our teachers. The students have also excelled themselves in numerous extra curricular activities like elocution competitions, debates and music, dance and play performances up to the national level. Recently, a project was undertaken, on the suggestion of Retd. Principal P.G.Hirlekar, by one of our meritorious student, Dr. (Ms.) S.S.Zarapkar, who over the years has risen to occupy the position of the Head of the Chemistry Department of our college. She worked towards extraction of oil from coconut shells for its antiseptic and larvicidal properties, which was later accepted as a patent by the Government of India in August 2000. The college has also taken up a vermiculture project whereby it proposes to create its own compost by utilising the massive degradable waste produced daily by the canteen. A Step Forward After becoming a multi faculty institution the college has striven to make available a wide variety of subjects by introducing a large number of applied componenets. In fact, ours was the first college to acquire a computer, and, the in house faculty of the computer department has set a glowing example by producing customised software for the examination department and to handle accounts, which has simplified the process of admissions for over five thousand students. So too, the nuclear chemistry laboratory has won the confidence of the BARC so that the only live isotope at the collegiate level is housed in our precincts. The college has also recently made available to the students the B.Sc (Computer Science) Course recently introduced by the University of Mumbai. Further, a large number of major and minor projects under the aegis of the University Grants Commission have been successfully executed by various members of the staff. Further the UGC has also provided its Assistance for Sports and Development to the college, using which the college is nearing completion of its Volley ball and Basket ball courts. Considering its all round development the college is now trying for accreditation, as autonomy will not merely enhance its esteem but also provide it scope to create interdisciplinary courses not envisaged in the somewhat mundane conception of the syllabi, so that the society can be better served. The Honourable Chancellor has in fact been strongly encouraging and backing the college in the matter. The courses that the college then wishes to design would be ones, which would create social awareness and tap the talent and strength of individual students, so as to give them the impetus to sustain themselves in a career Seeking Your Support In an attempt to bring to fruition our constant endeavour towards perfection, we now propose to raise a building to house a multi purpose auditorium. Over and above providing a space for the various extra curricular activities, we wish to provide classrooms for the Law College and house a Management institution with avant garde facilities at both the academic and infrastructural level. In fact, a network to connect the examination department, administration and library facilities and activities needs to be established, so as to smoothen the entire organisational process that such a large institution necessitates. More importantly, the human network, which gets gradually faded with the passage of time also needs to be re-strengthened by re-establishing lost contacts and consecrating existing ones, a task which we propose to undertake by creating a directory of our students. The various demands of campus development and the pressures of providing up to date infrastructural facilities with the mounting costs that such activities envisage require us to once again call together the widely spread out Ruparel community to extend a helping hand in making our organisation a premier learning institute which can fulfil the expanding needs of the society effectively in the years to come. If we all lend our shoulders to the work by making individual contributions or harnessing the potential of the corporate world, this colossal task will easily become a reality, one that will stand testimony to our journey into the future. Any help that can be thus rendered or harnessed in the form of cash, cheques or drafts could be addressed to The Principal We look forward to your response.
