Our parent body, Modern Education Society, Pune, founded
in 1932 by Principal, Late V. K. Joag manages following Colleges
in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Engineering
and Management in the cities of Pune and Mumbai :

The College located on a campus admeasuring 40217 square metres owes its pre-eminence in the sphere of education to Seth Gordhandas Jadavji Ruparel and his younger brother Seth Narayandas Jadavji Ruparel of Messrs Doongarsee Gangjee and Sons, Mumbai. In grateful appreciation of their generous and profound interest in our institution, it was named ‘The Doongarsee Gangjee Ruparel College’. Their father Seth Jadavji Doongarsee and uncle Seth Lalji Doongarsee, who had close association in business with Messrs Nowrosjee Wadia and Sons was continued by Seth Gordhandas and Seth Narayandas by the establishment of The Ruparel College in Mumbai; a sister institution of the Wadia College which the Wadia brothers, Sir Cusrow and Sir Ness helped the Society to establish in Pune.

The College situated in the Metropolitan City of Mumbai, is the only College of its kind that can boast of having a spacious campus with clean and green environment. It is located opposite Matunga Road Station (W.R.) and is a few minutes walk from Shivaji Park. The campus, known as the Ruparel College campus has Arts, Science, Library, Gymkhana and Canteen buildings,
Boy’s Hostel, Principal’s bungalow, two Vice – Principal bungalows and the Administrative building. The New Law College functions from the Arts building of the Ruparel College.

Junior College (Higher Secondary) classes started functioning with the Degree College in 1975. In 1980, various bi-focal Vocational courses were introduced at the +2 stage. At present, Electronics, Computer Science and Electrical Maintenance are offered at the +2 stage. In 1988 – 89, Minimum Competency Vocational Course (MCVC) was introduced. The new Three Year
Degree course was introduced by the University of Mumbai in 1977. The Commerce faculty was introduced in the College in 1979 – 80 and the first batch of T. Y. B.Com. students appeared in 1983.

The College has completed more than fifty years of glorious service in the field of academics, sports, performing arts and other extra curricular activities. The College, affiliated to the University of Mumbai has gathered the reputation and social recognition over the years as an institution second to none, a fact that is more than adequately proven by commendable
performance of our students at the Higher Secondary Board and University examinations; I.I.T., Medical and Management joint entrance examinations. About fifty percent of students in the merit list of H.S.C. examination are from our College.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited our College with the prestigious Grade A and we are one amongst the top 1% of the Colleges with higher grade in the country. With the Grade A status, we have been encouraged to set our goals higher and reach even greater
heights of excellence.

For the last 25 years we are successfully running the ‘Brihanmumbai Centre for Talent Search’ (BCTS), which aims at young talent from schools and colleges to prepare for competitive examinations such as National Talent Search (NTS), Pre-medical Test (PMT) and IIT’s JEE. More than 1500 Students of this centre have secured the coveted NTS scholarships in the past 25 years.

The College has produced a number of luminaries in the field of academics, sports and extra curricular activities. Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission; Shri Anil Joshi, MD, Dena Bank; Shri Subhash Dandekar, Chairman, Camlin Industry; Shri Gajanan Pendharkar, MD, Vicco Laboratories, Shri Ajit Agarkar, Ramesh Powar (cricket), Miss Urmila Matondkar (Film star), Shri Ashok Hande (Stage Artist) are some few in a forest of luminaries.

The College has set its goals and objectives in tune with the aspirations of our students vis a vis the needs and expectations of the society. We strive to impart quality education to our students and encourage them to participate in various co and extra curricular activities to bring out the best of their talents so as to enrich their all-round personality development in the
modern world of 21st century.

At present the College admits students for certain Post Graduate Courses for M.Sc. by Paper & by Research and Ph.D. Degree in subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, etc.

Keeping abreast with the advances in the world around and the need of the hour, the College is offering the following paper/courses on a No Grant Basis:

  • Paper in Information Technology at Junior College level
  • B.Sc. in Computer Science
  • M.Sc. - Computer Science
  • B.Sc. – Information Technology
  • M.Sc. - Information Technology
  • Bachelor of Management Studies (B. M. S.)
  • Profienciency course in English Language - for students of F.Y.B.A. who are not proficient in English under the COHSSIP scheme of the University Grants Commission.
  • Functional English as Vocational subject - under the scheme of the University Grants Commission in ARTS Stream.

The College has acquired 4 Broadband lines each of capacity 256 kbps for providing Internet facility to the students. In addition to the laboratories the Internet facility is available in all departments and on 16 terminals in the Library. Computerization of Office Administration & Library working is in full swing.

The Medium of Instruction for all courses is English.
